Matthias Beckert was born in Haßfurt, Germany in 1976. After graduating from high school he entered the conservatory of Würzburg where he was awarded a music teacher's certificate in 1999. He studied choral conducting under Prof. Jörg Straube (Würzburg Conservatory), culminating in his leading a performance of the Psalm Symphony by Igor Stravinsky in January of 2002. That same year he received his degree (A-exam) in Catholic church music, majoring in organ performance under Prof. Gerhard Weinberger. He further participated in a master class for choral conducting, which he successfully completed in 2004. Currently he is studying orchestral conducting under Prof. Hans-Rainer Förster.
In his hometown of Würzburg he has been the artistic director of the Ökumenischer Hochschulchor since 1998 and of the chamber orchestra Pizzicato since 1999. During the winter semester of 2001/02 he joined the faculty of the Würzburg Conservatory as a Visiting Instructor in Choral Conducting; in September 2002 Matthias Beckert became the artistic director of the Vokalensemble Cantabile Regensburg.
